Neurodiversity refers to the inherent variety in human brain function. It manifests and impacts social interactions, information processing, attention, mood, coordination, and other cognitive abilities. While encompassing both neurodivergent and neurotypical individuals, neurodivergence is mainly associated with dyslexia, ADHD, dyspraxia, autism, Tourette’s syndrome, among others. Approximately 1 in 7 people may be neurodivergent, highlighting the importance for organisations to address the needs of this significant segment of the population among their staff, customers, and service users.
Welcome to a space designed with you in mind. Whether you are seeking support, understanding, or simply a safe environment to express yourself, this introduction aims to offer a unique perspective on therapy tailored for neurodivergent individuals.
Counselling can often feel daunting, especially when traditional approaches don't align with your experiences or ways of thinking. As a neurodivergent human, you might have encountered challenges that are unique to your neurotype, whether it's related to autism, ADHD, dyslexia, or other forms of neurodivergence. This can include difficulties with communication, sensory sensitivities, or navigating social expectations.
My approach to counselling recognises and respects these differences. I understand that neurodivergence is not something to be "fixed" but rather an essential part of who you are. My goal is to create a therapeutic environment where your individual needs are acknowledged and valued. Here, you are encouraged to communicate in ways that are most comfortable for you, whether that's through speech, writing, art, or other forms of expression.
In this space, I prioritise:
Validation and Acceptance: Your experiences and feelings are valid. I strive to offer unconditional acceptance and a non-judgmental environment.
Customised Approaches: I adapt my methods to suit your unique way of processing and interacting with the world. This might include using visual aids, breaking down tasks into manageable steps, or allowing for sensory accommodations.
Empowerment and Self-Advocacy: I aim to empower you to understand and articulate your needs, helping you to develop strategies that enhance your well-being and quality of life.
I believe that by embracing neurodiversity, counselling can become a powerful tool for personal growth, self-understanding, and resilience. Together, we will work towards your goals, leveraging your strengths, and supporting you through your challenges.
Welcome to a counselling journey where your neurodivergent perspective is not only recognised but celebrated.
ADHD
I welcome all types of neurodivergence, but I have a particular interest in ADHD since this is my own lived experience, and area of research.
ADHD can impact our lives academically, professionally, personally, and will depend on our own unique circumstances and life experience. Together we can find the best way to recognise and work with that uniqueness. Together we can learn who you are today and what kind of you you want to be tomorrow.
It is something I've always been passionate about, and having worked with neurodivergent children/teens, adults, and their families it felt right to further my knowledge and understanding and offer support to ND humans within a counselling setting. So, wherever you are on your journey, or even if you’re just mildly curious about neurodiversity...maybe you have a family member or friend who is neurodivergent and you want to understand how best to support them. You might be a parent of a child and have perhaps started to wonder about yourself. You may however just need someone to help you gather the courage to seek a diagnosis...whatever your reasons, reach out and we can have a chat about it.
NEURODIVERGENT ADULTS
The grieving and acceptance process of a diagnosis of ADHD can be complex and unique to each individual. Initially, there may be feelings of shock, denial, or even anger upon receiving the diagnosis. The anger is often related to years of being misunderstood and the shame that we felt about not being quite good enough. Some people may grieve the perceived loss of a “normal” life or the realisation that they’ve been struggling with symptoms without understanding why.
As individuals come to terms with the diagnosis, they may experience a range of emotions including sadness, frustration, and fear about what it means for their future. They may mourn the idea of not being able to easily focus or regulate their attention or emotions like others. They mourn the life they could’ve had had they known.
However, acceptance often begins to emerge as individuals educate themselves about their way of thinking and symptoms and ultimately, treatment options. Connecting with others who share similar experiences can provide validation and support during this process. Therapy, medication, and lifestyle adjustments can also help you manage your symptoms and improve your overall quality of life.
Ultimately, acceptance involves embracing one’s neurodiversity and recognising that being neurodivergent is just one aspect of who you are. It’s about finding ways to navigate challenges, build on strengths, and create a fulfilling life despite the diagnosis. It’s important to remember that the grieving and acceptance process is not linear and may involve setbacks, but with time and support, you can find a sense of peace and empowerment.

SUPPORT FOR ADHD COUPLES
I work with ADHD couples (where one or both are ADHD) in much the same way I work with individual ADHD clients. I facilitate open and honest communication, explore the challenges the relationship has, and give space and validation to enable each person to come to a better understanding of themselves and in essence each other.
Most of the couples I see have similar challenges but also have a mutual desire to reach common ground. How they get there will depend on their own unique understanding of who they are and their coping strategies and experiences.
I also offer psychoeducation (and coaching if applicable) alongside therapy. Learning about how ADHD symptoms manifest and affect our daily lives is fundamental to acceptance and healing, within ourselves, and our relationships.
